Living Near the High Line Canal Trail: One of Littleton's Many Hidden Gems
Living Near the High Line Canal: One of Littleton's Hidden Gems
By Jason Reynolds | Living Local with Jason Reynolds
One of the things I've always appreciated about living in Colorado is how easily we can get outside and enjoy everything our state has to offer. And while our mountains get most of the attention, some of the best outdoor experiences are so close to home.
The High Line Canal Trail in Littleton / Highlands Ranch is a perfect example.
1. What Exactly Is the High Line Canal?
If you've lived around Littleton for a while, you've probably crossed the High Line Canal dozens of times without giving much thought to its history.
Originally built as an irrigation canal in the late 1800s, the High Line Canal has evolved into one of the Denver metro area's most treasured outdoor corridors.
Today, the Canal stretches approximately 71 miles, beginning near Waterton Canyon and winding through communities including Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village, Denver, and Aurora.
It's now loved by walkers, runners, cyclists, horseback riders, and nature enthusiasts.
Some sections are perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll, while others offer opportunities for longer walks and bike rides.
2. One of the Best Places to Walk, Run, or Ride Your Bike
What makes the High Line Canal different from many recreational trails is its relaxed, natural setting that's extra wide for easy passing.
Rather than following busy roads, many sections wind through mature trees, established neighborhoods, and beautiful stretches of open space.
Depending on where you access the trail, you'll find:
-
Relatively gentle terrain without major elevation changes
-
A mixture of gravel, natural-surface, and paved pathways
-
Mature trees providing shade along portions of the route
-
Opportunities to see birds and other wildlife
-
Connections to additional trails and neighborhood parks
For anyone who enjoys cycling, the Canal offers a different experience from some of Colorado's more demanding mountain biking trails.
It's a great place for a casual ride, especially when you want to enjoy the outdoors without climbing thousands of feet.
Jason's Local Perspective: When I'm exploring neighborhoods with buyers, I often encourage them to think about what they'll actually do on a typical Tuesday evening or Saturday morning. Having easy access to a trail can make those everyday moments more enjoyable.
3. Great Places to Explore the High Line Canal Around Littleton
One of the nicest things about the High Line Canal is that you can experience different sections without committing to a long outing.
Here are a few areas worth exploring.
Writers Vista Park and the Mineral Avenue Area
This is a useful area to discover the Canal and its connections to nearby neighborhoods.
Writers Vista Park provides a convenient starting point for exploring this portion of the trail.
It's also an area where the City of Littleton has been working on pedestrian and bicycle crossing improvements.
Lee Gulch Trail Connection
Another interesting location is where the High Line Canal meets the Lee Gulch Trail.
This junction features a historic wooden flume, a reminder of the Canal's original purpose.
In 2026, improvements were completed in this area, adding seating, educational signage, landscaping, and natural play elements.
It's a nice example of how communities are investing in outdoor spaces that are both recreational and educational.
The Southern Sections Near Highlands Ranch
The Canal's southern reaches offer a different landscape, with more open views and connections toward the foothills.
For those living in western Highlands Ranch or the southern Littleton area, these sections are worth discovering.

4. Why Living Near the High Line Canal Appeals to Homebuyers
When people begin searching for a home, their initial priorities usually include things like bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage, and price.
Those are obviously important.
But while helping buyers and sellers, I've learned that the features outside the home can be just as meaningful.
Think about the convenience of being able to:
-
Take an evening walk without getting in your car
-
Enjoy a morning run along a scenic trail
-
Head out for a family bike ride on the weekend
-
Walk the dog through an established, tree-lined corridor
-
Spend time outdoors without planning an entire day around it
For some buyers, these lifestyle benefits become an important part of their home search.
And it's not just families or outdoor enthusiasts.
Homeowners at different stages of life often begin thinking more about convenience, recreation, and reducing the responsibilities that come with owning a larger home.
For someone considering downsizing, a lower-maintenance property near a beautiful trail can be an appealing combination.
5. The High Line Canal Is Continuing to Improve
Another reason to keep an eye on the High Line Canal is the ongoing investment in its future.
The High Line Canal Conservancy works with local governments and community organizations to improve safety, accessibility, and the overall trail experience.
Some recent and planned Littleton-area projects include:
-
Mineral Avenue Crossing Improvements: Completed in early 2026, these improvements enhanced pedestrian ramps, visibility, striping, and signage. A potential future underpass has also been studied.
-
Lee Gulch Lookout: Completed in 2026, this project created an improved gathering and educational space near the historic flume.
-
County Line Trail Connections: Littleton is planning improvements intended to make walking and biking connections safer around County Line Road and the High Line Canal Trail.
-
Tree Planting and Restoration: Additional efforts are planned to protect and improve vegetation along portions of the Canal.
I love seeing these types of projects because they help preserve the outdoor amenities that make our communities enjoyable.

Final Thoughts: Sometimes the Best Amenities Are Right Outside Your Door
It's easy to get caught up in everything that goes into buying a home: mortgage rates, property taxes, square footage, and neighborhood comparisons.
But some of the things that make a home special aren't necessarily found inside its walls.
Sometimes it's the ability to step outside, enjoy a beautiful Colorado morning, and walk or ride along a trail just minutes from your front door.
The High Line Canal is one of those amenities that makes living around Littleton and Highlands Ranch so enjoyable.
And whether you're already a local resident or considering moving to the area, it's definitely worth exploring.
